Pumpkin Fries Recipe – Twice Fried

Sometimes it is easy to lull ourselves into thinking that we have had the chance to try out all the variations of pumpkin recipes available. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin chapatis and many more. But, trust me, once in a while you do come across something that blows your culinary socks off! Like this pumpkin Fries Recipe – Twice Fried.

I loved this recipe right from the get go and decided that I had to try it out. There was no doubt about it. I just had to. The anticipation was so high and it got me fearing that the results would not measure up. Well, I was not disappointed!

I peeled my pumpkin and chopped it into strips that were about 1/2 thickness and ensured that they were completely dry as demonstrated in the picture below.

The reason I fried my pumpkin twice was to ensure their crispiness. I mean, what’s the use of having soggy fries, regardless of the ingredient? Final product was very good. The pumpkin was sweet (as all pumpkins normally are) and I sprinkled some spices on it to add that extra kick to them. The spices I used were garlic powder, celery salt and cayenne pepper. Strange combination, right? Yes, even I thought this was one crazy combination until I tasted it. You just have to try it out to believe it. Most people are used to using cinnamon, nutmeg etc.

Ingredients

  • Pumpkin (enough for your needs, washed and sliced to about 1 inch thickness)
  • 500 ml of vegetable oil (adjust to suit your needs)
  • Spices of your choice (mine were Celery salt, Garlic powder and cayenne pepper)
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a pan until it becomes sufficiently hot. You will know its ready when you drop in one piece of pumpkin and it rises to the top. Add the pumpkin and cook for about ten minutes until just soft and pull out.
  2. Allow the oil to heat up again and then return the pumpkin to the oil. This step will ensure that the fries crisp up. Fry them for about 5 minutes and then drain the oil. Sprinkle some salt (if needed) and the spices.  Enjoy!
